In the community

We are more than an essential emergency service - we are a community asset.

Community events

Attending local events is a big part of our diary and we try to get out as much as possible! We aim to attend fetes and festivals in nearby villages – taking our boat, donation buckets and games. Community events help us raise funds and raise awareness of the work PLIRB and independent lifeboats do.

We are also infamous for our amazing BBQs and love to dish up the best burgers and hot dogs. And our daft games are an instant hit!

We are annual participants at local events including Pett Flower Show, Fairfest, Winchelsea Fete, Activate Youth Club Fair, Icklesham Fete, PettFest Beer Festival and Sea Sunday. We have a constantly growing diary – so look out for us and please do drop some pennies in our donation buckets!

Each year we hold our annual Open Day and Christmas Carol Concert – which now includes our Pett Slip Buoys!

Do contact us if you think we would be a good addition to your local event.

Community support - keeping it tidy and hazard free

The wonder of coastal and country life brings rural challenges!

We can be called upon to help remove fallen trees on the road or clear hazardous objects from the sea or beach. Our launch vehicle is ideal for shifting big weights that have drifted on to the beach.

We’ve provided emergency support during power outages, helped drag beached boats, rescued swans and all manner of requests! We strive to be a solid community asset – always call if you think there is something we can help with.

We are more than an essential emergency service – we are a community asset.

Community support - beach safety awareness and first aid

The PLIRB team have years of knowledge and experience of the local coastline – understanding the challenges and hazards is one of our core strengths.

Part of this is sharing knowledge and providing valuable guidance to local residents and visitors. Our beautiful coastline is subject to dangerous cliff falls and can be exposed to rocks and treacherous mud at low tide.

And while the shoreline under the cliffs is accessible at low tide, it is rapidly cut off as the tide flows in.

We aim to provide advice and guidance to anyone visiting the beach to ensure they are aware of and safe from the dangers.

We provide first aid for beach users who have incurred cuts, abrasions or stings. Most volunteers are fully trained in full casualty care so are equipped to manage more serious situations.

Community support - pitching in for local events

Every year the PLIRB team support the Nearly on the Beach concert by erecting and dismantling the perimeter barriers.

Whatever the weather, the PLIRB team are onsite early morning to make sure the concert space is secure for the music festival weekend. We return after the festival to take down the barriers – always rewarded with a hearty breakfast!

We also support the PettFest beer festival in Pett village, putting up marquees, painting signage and moving equipment.

How can we support you? We aim to help where we can – always call if you need help?

Community support - supporting beach cleans

Each year our friends at Strandliners carry out a vital beach clean at Pett Level. The clean up is not only crucial for keeping the coastline beautiful, but is analysed and provides valuable insight and research data for what is collected.

The Strandliners team collect the rubbish, tag and note the details and leave in suitable locations along the berm under the cliffs.

When conditions suit, our team deploy teams on the water and ashore to collect the bags of waste and return to the slip for collection by the council.

Community support - cleaning up our community

If we can go the extra mile – we will!

When our fantastic volunteers realised the terrible condition of the local public toilets at Winchelsea Beach, we contacted the council to volunteer support. They were so pleased for our offer!

We stripped away very heavy mould and years of grime build up, gave the facilities a thorough clean and repainted the entire spare to make the toilet a far more pleasant place to use! A grim job but worth it for the public users.

We are a valued and supportive community asset – get in touch if you think we can help!

Community support - remembering loved ones

Our area is loved by so many – whether those who have lived here all their lives or those who have fond memories of holidays in this special place.

We are asked to scatter ashes at sea for those who have had a connection with PLIRB or to help install a commemorative bench.

We strive to do this with compassion, sensitivity and dignity. We are always honoured when asked to conduct this precious ceremony.

Please contact us if you would like us to support a commemorative occasion.

Community support - placing the the sea marker buoys

Each year the council provide the sea safety marker buoys to support the safety of sea users. Our volunteers get their wellies on and drag the buoys and anchors down at low tide to embed them in the sand.

The marker buoys provide visible guidance to anyone using a pleasure craft for the entry lane to the slip and, importantly, the maximum speed at which they should be travelling (8 knots).

Building relationships

We are immensely proud of our reputation within our community and even more proud to serve.

We aim to forge strong and professional relationships with our partners in emergency services.

Our volunteer crew take the time to conduct visits to UK Coastguard bases to share and learn from each other. We frequently welcome other services to our boathouse to build and strengthen relationships and understand operations.

We visit our neighbouring RNLI stations – to get to know each other, share expertise and best practise and understand the assets.

We are proudly INDEPENDENT but work closely with all emergency services and assets.

Community visits and presentations

An important part of our community work is to raise awareness – not only of what PLIRB does, but also to promote beach and sea safety and to inspire and encourage involvement.

Boathouse visits: We welcome groups of school or community youth groups to our boathouse to provide an opportunity for them to learn more about what we do, the skills and experience that can be gained and view our boat and launch vehicle assets.

Community presentations: We often visit other local organisations to deliver a presentation on PLIRB – showcasing our history and journey and the many ways that people can get involved.

If you would like to arrange either a visit to the boathouse or a presentation, please contact us at info@plirb.org.
